How to install a Windows XP Networked Printer
Rev 1.0 14/3/21
This is one of my personal "Cheat Sheets" which I've accumulated and built up
over the years to help me and other Technical People solve problems. And maybe
remind them or point out some tricks which they may have forgotten or not been
aware of.
I call them "Cheat Sheets" as they are intended to be very summarised hints
that someone might love to have in an exam :)
How to install a Windows XP Networked Printer CheatSheet
--------------------------------------------------------
First you need to find out the printer's Node Name/Port Name/Host Name/NetBIOS
Name.
Usually the printer manufacturer provides a utility to scan for the printer on
the LAN to find this.
Else go into your router and see if you can find it in the router's "DHCP
Clients List" where it may be called "Host Name" and will show the allocated IP
Address.
Often you can also use a Internet Browser and simply put in the printer's IP
Address which you get from the printer diagnostic configuration printout or the
Router's "DHCP Clients List".
Example Brother Printer HL-L2305W
This printer has WiFi Networking with a Linux type LPR Print Server built in.
You do not need to install all the bulky utilities and driver package.
Install the basic printer driver if Windows XP Does not have it and if just
the driver is available.
Determine the printer networked printer details such as Node Name/Port
Name/Host Name/NetBIOS Name and IP Address using the above method. Or install
the Brother BRAdmin Light program to allow you to scan for the networked
printer details.
