* * * Edward's Original Cheat Sheet - Windows 11 * * *
Rev 1.0 14/1/25
This is one of my personal "Cheat Sheets" which I've accumulated and built up
over the years to help me and other Technical People solve problems. And maybe
remind them or point out some tricks which they may have forgotten or not been
aware of.
I call them "Cheat Sheets" as they are intended to be very summarised hints
that someone might love to have in an exam :)
Windows 11 CheatSheet
---------------------
* How to bring up DOS Command Prompt:
Press the Windows-key, type cmd.exe and hit ENTER
Or
Start (Bottom Left icon)|Windows System|Command Prompt
* Windows 10 Activation
To check if Windows 10 is activated: Several ways
- slmgr /xpr
Should show Windows version and "the machine is permanently activated"
or "Volume activation will expire 1/2/2020 1:02:03 PM"
or "Windows is in notification mode"
- Start|Settings|Activation
Should show version and "Windows is activated"
- Control Panel|System
Should show Product ID and "Windows is activated"
* To check Windows 11 System Requirements compliance
These are the nastiest two aspects of upgrading to Windows 11. No matter how
up to date of fast your CPU and other system components are. Why ? Many
people say "So that it is better to track you and your licensing with!"
Because after all the choice of security degree and compromise level should be
your choice. Not Microsoft.
- Windows 11 needs Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
To check:
Start|Run|tpm.msc
If it is less than 2.0 your device does not meet Windows 11 requirement.
You need UEFI BIOS (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, a new version of the
PC BIOS)
If you have UEFI BIOS see if you can change it in your UEFI BIOS
- Windows 11 needs UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, a modern
version of the PC BIOS) and Secure Boot capable. If your PC is not Secure Boot
capable you need to research if you can enable this. Secure Boot can only be
enabled with UEFI.
Go to Settings|Update & Security|Recovery|Restart now under Advanced startup.
On the next screen select Troubleshoot|Advanced options|UEFI Firmware Settings|
Restart to make changes.
To change these settings you need to switch the PC boot mode from one set to
"Legacy BIOS" (also known as "CSM"Mode) to UEFI/BIOS (Unified Extensible
Firmware Interface). In some cases there are options to enable both UEFI and
Legacy/CSM. If so, you will need to choose for UEFI to be the first or only
option.
