Micronica Navis USB
Some Common Questions
Navis USB is a complete USB video capture device with MPEG 1/2 hardware
compression built in. Setup is extremely simple. It is so simple you can get it up and running in as little as 15 minutes! And it really works very well !
For full info, check out www.micronica.com.au/catalog/navis/.
Of course the best thing is to get one and try it for yourself ! So you can
see and understand how easy it is :)
Following are notes for some specific common questions we have been asked
about.
-
Q: I've never captured a digital video file before. It all seems a
bit scary. What settings do you recommend to start ?
A: Don't worry ! With Navis USB it's all REALLY EASY ! If you've never played
with captured video files before here is what I suggest. Set the Navis USB
capture settings to MPEG 1, 1.5 Mbps, PAL. Capture a short video and save it. These
settings will give you a good starting point for clarity and file size. And
they will play on ANY computer Windows Media Player automatically WITHOUT any special
plugins, drivers or codec. So you can then simply pass that file around for
all to see. And also edit. Well, at least I've never found a PC that could'nt play it
:)

Q: Can I use it on a Laptop Computer and still get good results ?
A: Quality is the same whther you use a desktop or laptop computer.
Because NAVIS USB is so compact and uses USB it's great for both. You can
take it to a friend's place or to School to do your Video projects for
example.
-
Q: Whats the difference between VCD and SVCD ?
A: SVCD is enhanced VCD. SVCD is MPEG 2 but at a lower bit
rate and resolution than a full DVD. 480x576 25 fps PAL 2.4 Mbps. You can
burn and read SVCD video using standard CD's but you will
need an MPEG2 CODEC on your PC such as Power DVD to play SVCD. Some DVD
players can also play SVCD but many can not. The SVCD standard is not well
defined and Navis USB does not support SVCD directly. It is up to the user
if they want to experiment with SVCD. SVCD is beyond our scope to support and
help.

Q: It all installed OK. Only took 10 minutes! But nothing is working. Where do I start ?
A: Check your software installation. In a typical Windows 98 setup
you would have a C:\Program Files\NAVIS2 directory with all the software in it.
There should be a Desktop "NAVIS2" icon and the Navis Scheduler icon
normally appears in the Windows Task Bar (bottom right corner of your
Windows screen :).
The "Properties" of the "NAVIS2" desktop icon should show:
C:\Program Files\NAVIS2\NAVIS2.exe
Start in: C:\Program Files\NAVIS2
Launch the Navis Capture Utility by "Double Clicking" the "NAVIS2" Desktop
icon. If that doesn't work it's time for you to get your system checked out
by a proper qualified computer technician :) We can usually arrange that for a fee if
required.

Q: My Navis installed OK on my Win98SE. But when I try to record I get an error message.
Any suggestions ?
A: Don't panic.
1) Make sure you have a Video Signal properly connected ! Before you try to
record ! Otherwise you will have to shut down the software and try again.
2) Make sure you have selected the Composite or S-Video source and PAL or
NTSC in your configuration, as appropriate.
3) If your video signal is not correctly plugged in or selected you will get
the following typical error messages:
- Error Message when you select "Preview Record":
"NAVIS2 Vertical sync signal not detected from stream source. Please check
hardware connection and program restart."
- Error Message when you select ""Record":
"An error occured in Microsoft DirectShow. System restart or reinstall
DirectShow and Navis program."
In both cases check your video connections and settings ;-)
-
Q: I installed the Navis Software without any problem. But when I launch the Navis USB Software from the "NAVIS2" Desktop
Icon I get en error message and the software does not launch at all. Any suggestions ?
A: Error message "NAVIS2. Application can not instanciate Usb filter.
Current operation can not proceed and will be terminated." is the classic
error message if the Navis USB unit is not plugged in or switched on ! So please check
that the power is on and that all the cables are properly connected.
Including the USB cable. Also make sure that your USB port on your computer
is even working. And that you have all drivers that came with your particular computer motherboard
installed properly.
-
Q: I run Windows XP and I installed the standard driver CD that came with
the Navis. It does not seem to work properly.
A: Windows XP, like with most things, needs a Windows XP Video
Capture Driver. So do not install the Win98/ME/2000 driver on the standard
CD. We can provide you the necessary Windows XP driver instead. Ask for it
when you buy the Navis USB.
-
Q: The video is black and white, not colour. Whats's wrong ?
A: You probably have the video input standard set to NTSC and you are
trying to capture PAL. Set the input standard to PAL.
-
Q: What are some of the Video Standards around and how much time can I record on a typical CD ?
A: For a summary of Standard Definition and High Definition Video
Standards and also MPEG,VCD and DVD standards see our "Micronica Video
Capture Cheet Sheet" at http://micronica.com.au/video/faq.htm
There you will find LOTS of good information and advice on how to capture
your own videos like a Pro ;-)
Where can you buy it ? It's quick and easy !
